Gene Ward has been a member of the House of Representatives for 8 terms representing Hawaii Kai and East Honolulu. He is the Vice Chair of the Committee on Economic Development and served as Minority Leader for 3 terms. He has spent most of his career in professional and upper management positions at the state, national and international level. Most recently he was the Peace Corps Country Director in the newly independent country of East Timor. Prior to this he served as a Democracy Officer in USAID in Washington D.C., and was a Presidential Appointee in the Bush Administration.

He has served as Peace Corps Volunteer in North Borneo and was a United Nations small business specialist/chief technical advisor for two years in Malawi, Africa. He was later a consultant to UNIDO and the ILO in the Asia-Pacific region for entrepreneurship development.

Representative Ward is a graduate of the University of Hawaii-Manoa with a Ph.D. in Business Sociology and was a degree scholar at the East-West Center, and later served on its Board of Governors. He is married to Faredah Ward of Malaysia, and has one daughter. He is a founding member of the Hawaii – Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and authored legislation for the creation of the Hawaii-Bali Sister State Relationship. He speaks Malay and Indonesia, and basic Vietnamese and is a member of Rotary International.
