THE EVENT
What is Hong Kong's future role?
We are excited to present to you Prof. David Donald - Emeritus Faculty at Chinese University of Hong Kong who recently relocated to Hawai’i.
A city of Chinese under British control for over 150 years, Hong Kong became a leader among international financial centers primarily serving the return of the China economy in the late 20th century. But following the global financial crisis and the US Pivot to Asia, social and economic tensions led to a protest movement in Hong Kong that culminated in both peaceful pro-democracy protests and violent riots by 2019. Political change and rigid Covid-19 controls, together with simplifications in Western media, have left many wondering about Hong Kong's future path. David's presentation offers a historical, economical and geopolitical framework that may help to understand where the city stands today and where this very unique Indo-Pacific metropole might be headed.
David C. Donald is Emeritus Professor in the Law Faculty of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and an attorney practicing business and estates law in Honolulu.
David has also taught at Goethe University, National Taiwan University and China University of Political Science and Law. Prior to his academic career, David worked as a commercial lawyer in the US and Europe. His publications have focused on corporate law and securities market structure, with an emphasis on comparative law issues and new technology. David is a graduate of Georgetown University (Law); Syracuse University (BA American Studies); University of Buffalo (PhD Comparative Literature); Goethe University (PhD and MA Law).
